Reading Revival

Charismatic Renewing of Literacy Starts Here

I am from the Southern Bible Belt, and I was raised to attend church revivals. If you can relate to this, you already know the purpose of a revival. However, if you're not familiar with Christian revivalism, let me explain the purpose of this blog and how it is similar to what Christians need from time to time, yet ongoing throughout life.

All education stakeholders need an increased interest in literacy within our society. We need a reading revival to come together, charismatically, to renew our understandings and practices. Just as Christians listen to evangelist leaders - those truly passionate about education and literacy need to turn to the "educated " to know "what works better." Make sure you read my post about those that are "educated."

About Me.

I would consider myself a seasoned elementary teacher that is now a novice literacy teacher educator. I say "novice" not just because of the number of years I've been in this position but also because I see how much more I need to learn. After completing my Master of Education in Reading/Literacy, I thought I was well educated and had all the needed knowledge. However, it didn't take long to realize that I still had a lot to learn, and I am forever grateful for the veteran teachers that supported me. Now, I still had great success in my classrooms and what I was doing seemed to work because I did have good results. However, when I reflect on what I am learning now to what I thought I knew back then, I always consider "what if…" Even today, with continuing professional development, starting a new job in higher education, and starting my Doctor of Education journey, I still see now that I have so much more to learn.

Having experience teaching PK, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade, I have faced the challenges that come with the job. Now that I work within a teacher preparation program, I see the value in ensuring our future teachers are equipped for the challenges they'll experience in their classrooms. That's the purpose of this blog – to better support those who share the same passion for literacy learning. I want to help all in the field - not just doing what works but also learning more and doing more of what may work better.
